Some of the highlights seen here represent art created at Art Center (80-82), my editorial illustrations (82-90) which reflect mainly social\/political themes and a myriad of portraits (80-90) from the young Hemingway on the cover of the New York Times Magazine to my journalistic project with the soon to be heavyweight boxing champion, Mike Tyson for Sports Illustrated. I started going to the San Diego Comic Convention in 1990 at the recommendation of Kent Williams and realized the potential of creating an art business with the support of fans and collectors. Here Jon J. Muth, Dave McKean, Ciruelo, and other creative souls were creating their own projects and selling them to the people who loved them. It inspired me to explore the heart of my art, opening fantastical channels of my imagination.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMichelle Barnes and I produced a musical project called, \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/www.spalenka.com\/collections\/music\/products\/the-visions-of-vespertina-cd\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe Visions of Vespertina \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003ewhich fused our art and music and was picked up by a record label.I was still creating illustration for the publishing industry including some comic art for Sandman and other DC books, but much of my interest was in manufacturing my own products. The illustration world was waning in strength when another opportunity presented itself…\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eProduction Designer Barry Jackson asked me to join his concept design team on a CG animate feature film called, \u003cem\u003eThe Ant Bully\u003c\/em\u003e, directed by Jon Davis. This began a five year journey of working on feature films from \u003cem\u003eThe Voyage of the Dawn Treader\u003c\/em\u003e to \u003cem\u003eThe Golden Compass\u003c\/em\u003e. I learned the importance of visual development in story telling whether it was moving or not. Understanding how the CG pipeline works in an increasingly tech driven industry opened my eyes to the complexities of making film in our times. The \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMusing the Goddess\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e art show \u003cspan\u003eat the Cornell Winery \u003c\/span\u003einspired me to start working on larger scale pieces of art.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI moved to Santa Fe in 2017. \u003c\/span\u003eMy ten year music project, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.spalenka.com\/pages\/what-is-memory-of-a-cosmic-heart\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eMemory of a Cosmic Heart\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003ecreated with writing partner, Rob Jacobs comes to completion in 2019 with amazing talent bringing a transcendent vibe to the vision. The first version of this project is finished, but stay tuned for the graphic novel of the story in 2022 with more musical transformation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTeaching is still a part of my paradigm. 2020 will be my 10th year of moderating panel discussions at \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.comic-con.org\/\"\u003eSDCC \u003c\/a\u003eon art career clarity and sustainability! I am also teaching at the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/iaia.edu\/\"\u003eInstitute of American Indian Arts\u003c\/a\u003e and learning much with this experience. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI begin experimenting with Cyanotypes and will be sharing these explorations in the near future.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLiving in Santa Fe is a new adventure and bringing life to the many personal projects that have been kicking around inside my heart and mind for decades.
