psych-drug

In the 80’s and early 90’s I was cranking out lots of social and political illustrations for the major newspapers, and magazines.  This piece for the Los Angeles Times Magazine was about a new contraceptive drug that was implanted under the skin called Norplant and was effective for five years. It was being touted as a miracle contraceptive but as usual when it comes to any drugs there are side effects. It was finally taken off the market.

I experimented with my art materials to see how far I could push a medium. This art has graphite, charcoal, acrylic, oil, bits of collage, tape, glue, and a healthy dose of  sandpaper abuse integrated into it. This art is now hangs in the collection of John Foster.

See more of my art in The Art of Greg Spalenka: Visions from the Mind’s Eye to be released by Titan Books in July 2014, at the San Diego Comic Con.
